LAMIS PROJECT

Il LAMIS Project

(Megarian Landscape and Heritage Project)

is a research program of the Institute of Heritage Sciences (CNR-ISPC) which deal with the study of archaeological, monumental and landscape heritage of the Megarian area (Municipalities of Augusta, Melilli and Priolo Gargallo) through the development of multidisciplinary investigations.

The territory has a heritage of great importance because over the centuries it has been an area for experimentation of settlement processes that have constituted important experiences for the historical and cultural development of Sicily and the Mediterranean.

Despite this, today it is occupied by vast and invasive industrial and anthropic infrastructures that have produced a profound impact on the cultural and landscape heritage, leading to pollution and spatial fragmentation. The complexity of historical and cultural developments and the recent human interventions are the main issues to be addressed in order to acquire a full contextual knowledge and reconstruct the relationships and the diachronic development of settlements and landscapes. Furthermore, these issues represent a great challenge both to achieve a correct and conscious protection, conservation and management of heritage and to develop a model of sustainability for the future.

The general objective of the project, therefore, is to recompose the
cultural and landscape context of the territory, in order to propose a model for:

CONSERVATION

AND MANAGEMENT
